Laval, Quebec: Unity, Progress, Greatness

Laval, Quebec Once a small town on the outskirts of Montreal, Laval has grown through the amalgamation of fourteen separate municipalities into the third largest city in Quebec. Laval, QC now occupies the entire Island of Jesus as well as the Laval Islands, which are situated between the Riviere des Mille Iles and the Riviere des Prairies. With a population of over 368,000, nearly 70% of whom are Francophone, Laval is also the fifth largest suburb in all of North America. Laval takes its name from Francois de Montmorency-Laval, who was the first European owner of the Island of Jesus and the first Bishop of Quebec. The city motto is "unity, progress, greatness" in French.

The first industry to flourish in Laval, QC was agriculture, beginning in the 1670s. Its proximity to Montreal brought growth and urbanization and gradually its economy expanded. It now includes pharmaceutical research, manufacturing, warehousing, and technology as well as agriculture. Though the island has four industrial parks and a wide variety of retail shopping, it remains suburban in nature, with many of its occupants traveling into Montreal for work on the Metro.

Though Laval, Quebec is primarily French, there are enough English speaking residents in the city to warrant dual-language education, which is accomplished separately by two distinct school boards. At the post-secondary level there are a number of institutions, from major universities like the University of Montreal's Laval campus to career training colleges like the Laval Polytechnical School. Some schools offer bilingual instruction because they are affiliated with the officially bilingual federal government, but many are private and as such classes are given entirely in French.

Outside of work or school there are plenty of activities to enjoy in Laval, QC. Parks and natural habitats like Le Parc de la Riviere-des-Mille-Iles offer the opportunity to go hiking, biking, camping, boating or just enjoy nature. There are also three golf courses on the island and kids will love the Cosmodome, which is home to Space Camp Canada and six space simulators including a zero gravity wall.
